06 10 25 - Romania nominates Liberal Senator Vosganian as EU Commissioner

From: "Annette Melikian" Date: 25 Oct 2006,
Romania's National Liberal Party senator Varujan Vosganian has been nominated for EU commissioner, the prime minister announced.
The statement of Prime Minister Tariceanu denied earlier reports, which tipped Romanian Minister of Justice Monica Macovei for the Brussels job.

Romania's Prime Minister Tariceanu had indicated he had to choose between seven candidates. His favourite was believed to be the foreign minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu.
The Financial Times wrote earlier this month that the EU Commission preferred Macovei to stay home and continue the reform of justice that she managed so far.
Bulgaria chose EU-Affairs Minister Meglena Kuneva to be the candidate for the Brussels job. Her nomination was reportedly negotiated among the leaders of the three-way coalition late on Monday.

Jose Manuel Barroso would have to examine and proposals for EU
commissioner made by Bucharest and Sofia and if he accepts them, the candidates would then have to pass the EU Parliament
examination.
Barroso would also have to attribute portfolios to these two newcomers, but he said he would do so once he would know who
these people are.
