ARMENIAN MP VARTKES MAHDESSIAN CONDEMNS RACIST COMMENTS ON GAROYIAN'S ELECTION www.gibrahayer.com
Armenian MP press release - Nicosia 7 arch, 2008 - Armenian Parliamentary representative of Cyprus Vartkes Mahdessian, expressed his and the Armenian community's sorrow regarding comments made against the President of the Cyprus House of Representatives, Marios Garoyian.
He branded them as racist, and referred to similar comments made in the past when reference was made to Garoyian's Armenian origin, when he was seeking the Presidency of the DIKO party last year.
Mahdessian mentioned the long history and contribution of Cypriot Armenians, and made reference to the Cyprus constitution that recognises Armenian Cypriots as equals.
He also mentioned that such behaviour is unacceptable in a European Cyprus, and that our main concern and efforts should be geared towards a viable and fair solution of the Cyprus problem.
STATEMENT BY THE OFFICE OF THE ARTSAKH REPUBLIC IN WASHINGTON DC

Washington, DC – Last week an Azerbaijani military unit attacked defence positions of Nagorno Karabakh, wounding two Karabakh officers and seizing two military posts near Levonarkh located in the northern part of the Line of Contact. After fruitless attempts to reinstate the status-quo through OSCE mediation, the NKR Defence Army launched a counter-offencive and restored its defence positions causing casualties to the adversary.
This blatant violation of the 1994 Ceasefire Agreement by Azerbaijan follows President Ilham Aliyev’s recent statement that his country had been buying military hardware, aeroplanes and ammunition and was prepared to attack Nagorno Karabakh again.
NKR Government informed the OSCE representative in the region about the Azeri attack and asked the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-office to urge Baku to stop the offencive and retire to previous positions. However, Azerbaijan’s refusal to cooperate left no option for the NKR defence forces other than to respond in kind, reclaiming the two military posts after a brief but intensive firefight.
NKR Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for a crisis-monitoring of the area to fully investigate the incident. However, the mission, which was planned for March 7, had to be postponed due to Baku's refusal to ensure the security of the OSCE personnel.
NKR military intelligence points to increased concentration of Azerbaijani military hardware and personnel close to Levonarkh.
“We urge, once again, the Azeri leadership to refrain from attempts to violate the armistice and also warn that any intrusion by the Azeri military units will receive an adequate response of the NKR Defence Army,” said today’s statement of the NKR Foreign Ministry.
The OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs issued a statement in which they called on the conflicting sides to restore confidence along the Line of Contact and desist from any further confrontations, escalation of violence or warmongering rhetoric.
“The Co-Chairs reiterate that there is no military solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The outbreak of hostilities would destabilise the entire region, with calamitous consequences for all involved”, the statement said in part.
In the last several years Azerbaijan has used its vast oil revenues to build up its offencive capabilities aimed against Nagorno Karabakh, threatening the latter with another war. Azerbaijan’s destructive behaviour jeopardises OSCE mediation efforts and also goes against the U.S. goal of fostering peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
The Nagorno Karabakh Republic remains fully committed to the peaceful resolution of the conflict with Azerbaijan and also ready to resume full-fledged negotiations without any preconditions. NKR welcomes continued mediation efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group, co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France.
We also call on the United States and the international community to hold Azerbaijan accountable for the recent violation of the truce and to help prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.

TURKEY TO INTERVENE IN NAGORNO KARABAKH ???
Gibrahayer - Nicosia March 12 - The Azeri/Turkish propaganda machine is at work again, spreading lies. This time it is Karabagh's turn and the Turkish propaganda machine is now "seeing" Kurds relocating in Artsakh, who have fled from from northern Iraq.
Whether these stories are fabricated to cover Turkey's aggression in North Iraq, whether these stories are used for internal consumption in Azerbaijan, we here in Cyprus can simply state the following"
"WE HAVE SEEN AND HEARD IT ALL BEFORE"
Reading these lies, we remember when the Turkish propaganda machine was "seeing" Armenian terrorists in Melkonian School, planning helicopter attacks on our community and demanding from the Cyprus government to contain terrorist pockets in government controlled areas !!!
Now we read the following from the same propaganda machine:

Makfax Agency - Bolis March 6, 2008 - Turkey is bracing for a joint military operation with Azerbaijan in Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijan's daily Yeni Musavat writes in today's edition. According to the newspaper, the preparations are under way for a comprehensive military operation in Nagorno Karabakh against members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) who were forced out from northern Iraq by the Turkish Army. Yeni Musavat's article, which was cited in several Turkish media today, says that "even US approved such a move." The daily further says that a joint Turkish-Azeri headquarter has been already set up. Nagorno Karabakh is an enclave formed on the territory of Azerbaijan, populated with Armenians.
